Subject: Physics
Class: Form 4A
Date: 7 February 2012
Time: 11.35 am – 12.35 pm (60
minutes)
No.
of students: 25 students
Learning
Area : Forces
and Motion
Learning
Objective: Analysing Momentum
Learning
Outcomes: At the end of the lesson, a student
is able to:
A Master content knowledge
a. State
the principle of conservation of momentum
b. Describe
applications of conservation of momentum
c. Solve
problems involving momentum
B Master
Scientific Skills/TSTS
a.
Comparing and contrasting skillfully
b.
Researching and reporting on the
applications of conservation of momentum in rockets and jet engines
C Demonstrate
Scientific Attitudes and Noble Values
a. Listen
respectfully and for understanding
b. Striving for accuracy
Scientific
Concepts:
The
total momentum in an isolated system is a constant
Jet
engines and rockets function based on the principle of conservation of momentum
Materials,
equipments and resource materials:
Reference books
Text book
Interactive CD
Graphic organizers
Consideration
of Safety Precautions:
None
Prior
Knowledge:
Students have already learned the definition
of momentum being the product of mass and velocity
Phase 1 (7 min): Introduce the lesson by explaining the learning outcomes. Review the
concept of momentum and make connection to the current lesson. Introduce
familiar situation of comparing and contrasting Kanchil and Myvi cars. Ask
guided questions to prompt students to compare and contrast skillfully. Elicit
students’ ideas about rockets and jet engines.
Phase
2 (30 min): Teacher asks the question: How are rockets and jet engines
alike and different? Working in groups, students engage in a guided practice in
comparing and contrasting skillfully and at the same time engage with the concept
of rockets and jet engines and therefore the principle of conservation of
momentum. Prompt students to employ the selected habits of mind.
Phase 3 (15 min): Students work in groups to solve several problems involving momentum (assessment of content learning). Prompt
students to employ the selected habits of mind.
Phase 4 (8 min): Teacher closes the lesson by first reviewing the learning outcomes,
assessing students’ understanding by giving a short quiz and having students make
conclusion and reflect on their thinking (meta-cognition) and overall learning
experience. Writing assignment using compare and contrast writing map as
homework (assessment of content learning
and compare and contrast thinking skill).
